Verda has been involved in children’s ministry most of her life. Her father was an evangelist and during her childhood years she traveled all across America with her family. Early in life she knew she wanted to be a teacher and felt called to ministry. Her first teaching experience was assisting in a 2nd grade Sunday school class when she was twelve years old. As a teenager, she taught children’s church, was active in music ministry, and traveled with Youth With a Mission in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
After Verda and her husband, Roger, moved into their first home in Downey, California, she began teaching a neighborhood Bible club, called Good News Club. Every week of the school year their living room was overflowing with children who came to hear exciting Bible stories, play games, and learn more about God’s love for them.
After the family moved to Salem, Oregon, Verda taught another Good News Club in their new home for the next five years. The entire family was active in ministry at the Peoples Church in Salem, Oregon, where Verda taught Sunday school and children’s church and directed the bus ministry. In 1984 she joined the pastoral staff at the People’s Church as the Children’s Ministry Director where she served for seven years.
Verda has a B.S. in Family Studies from Southern Nazarene University (95) and earned a Master’s in Education from Oral Roberts University in 1998. In the same year, she began serving as the National Children’s Ministry Consultant and Junior Bible Quiz Coordinator for the Assemblies of God in Springfield, Missouri. She was also an adjunct instructor and writer at Oral Roberts University, and taught at Central Bible College.
From 2007 until 2012 Verda taught online courses for Children’s Ministry University Online through Valley Forge Christian College. Verda has written for the Christian Education Counselor, Enrichment Journal, and Radiant Life Curriculum including Step One: A Guide for Teachers (GPH), and was a contributing author to Give Them What They Want, and Make a Difference, Be a Teacher! Verda has written two books; Through the Bible Learning Activities for Young Children, and First Steps for Effective Teaching.
